Is Umamiya the “Rebecca Black” of Asia?

Oh, no. I have heartbreaking news for Umamiya Lovers around the world…..

It is almost too difficult to write this post.

Since the release of Umamiya’s groundbreaking CF and documentary, I have been monitoring the success of our favorite girl group. Last week, Han Kim from In the Kimchi Jar, let me know that Umamya’s “Hot, Sour, Spicy and Sweet” mv was viewed over 20,000 times on vimeo! I was happy to see Umamiya’s popularity soar!

That is, until I read numerous message boards with painful comments about our beloved group. Here is just one of the many Korean sites below. (Thanks to Han Kim for the translations.)

To be honest, I wanted to overlook these negative comments. I wrapped myself in my Snuggie and wept for days. I wanted to pretend that these messages did not exist. However, I would not be serving the Umamiya Lovers community if I did that. You have all voted me the President of the Umamiya Fan Club because of my integrity.

We all know that Umamiya is not the typical Asia Pop girl group. That is why we love them, right? The members are talented and break stereotypes and represent all the older, thicker gals out there. Umamiya shows people all over the world that happiness and self- acceptance are the true standards of beauty! Let us all stand together in support of Umamiya! Let us all encourage one another to be brave in the face of this adversity! Shine on, Umamiya. Shine on! Fighting!
